In the case of Pokémon\, people can participate in events before the set comes out. Each person receives a Build & Battle kit\, which consists of a random 40 card deck and 4 packs of the set. Then they battle it out in 3 rounds of a Swiss style Tournament and receive extra packs at the end for participating! Players get to keep all of the cards that they get from prereleases. \nThe Prerelease format allows players to compete using a 40-card deck with four Prize cards set aside at the start of play. This is different from the usual 60-card deck with six Prize cards. We have sheets available in-store\, and the rest of the registration process can be done at home. \nWhat is a Pokémon League Challenge?\nPokémon League Challenges are competitive level tournaments at the Local Store level. These events are entry-level competitions\, great for competitors of all experience levels! League Challenges specifically grant Championship Points toward earning an invitation to the Pokémon World Championships. League Challenge events are typically held once per month at select Pokémon League locations. These events use the Standard format\, and require decks to be Tournament legal. \nAt higher levels are Pokémon League Cups. Typically held quarterly\, League Cup event competitors can expect a step up\, with tougher competitors vying for greater rewards. Cards with “H\,” “I\,” and “J” regulation marks will be legal to use (as will any future regulation marks that may be released). A card’s legality status is not based on which expansion it’s from. Even if a card is from a recently released expansion\, players will need to refer to the regulation mark on the bottom of the card to see whether that card is legal for play. So don’t wait\, grab a deck and be the very best (like no one ever was) to start your Pokémon adventure today! \nThis event welcomes players of all ages and skill levels. \nCheck out our other Pokémon events here: Pokémon Events at Gnome Games Appleton North \nWith Standard format rotating soon\, a reminder:\nFor in-person Play! Pokémon events\, the Standard format rotation for 2026 competitive play will go into effect on April 10\, 2026. \n\nCards with the “G” regulation mark will no longer be legal for play in the 2026 Standard format. Cards with “H\,” “I\,” and “J” regulation marks will be legal to use (as will any future regulation marks that may be released). A card’s legality status is not based on which expansion it’s from. Even if a card is from a recently released expansion\, players will need to refer to the regulation mark on the bottom of the card to see whether that card is legal for play. New cards still must follow the appropriate waiting period to become tournament legal\, which is typically two weeks after their release.
